The Proton Therapy Center opened in Prague in 2012. The center treats oncological diseases using proton therapy, a novel method for destroying malignant tumors with minimal harm to the body.
The method’s distinctive feature, reflected in its name, is the use of protons for irradiation. Physicians can precisely control the direction of the proton beam and the exact point where the protons release their energy. This technique prevents radiation from scattering into surrounding tissues and avoids affecting organs located before or beyond the tumor. This opens new possibilities:
-
Treatment of cancer in children;
-
Removal of tumors in the brain, lungs, liver, and other organs where the tumor is closely surrounded by healthy tissue;
-
Short sessions that are easily tolerated even by children.
The Proton Therapy Center operates six days a week and treats patients in four radiotherapy rooms equipped with the latest medical technology. Proper planning of the treatment course is possible only after detailed diagnostics, for which patients undergo PET-CT and MRI scans, as well as physician consultations.
To maximize treatment effectiveness, the center collaborates with other medical institutions in Prague, including the Motol Pediatric Hematology and Oncology Clinic and Brno Hospital.
Patient comfort is the center’s top priority. A special playroom is available for children, and the post-session relaxation room is designed to feel welcoming rather than like a typical hospital ward. Patients can spend their free time exploring Prague, one of Europe’s most beautiful cities, with staff providing guidance on attractions and assistance with tickets.
