Large uterine fibroids

Fibroids are benign neoplasms in the uterus. It is an extremely common disease, according to statistics, affects about 45% of women by the age of 35.

This tumor tends to increase in size, which is dangerous for the body. If it is easy enough to get rid of a small formation, then a large uterine fibroid is more difficult to treat, while negatively affecting the condition of nearby organs.

Risk factors for this disease include heredity, overweight, certain endocrine diseases, stress, excessive physical activity, and chronic infectious diseases.

Treatment of large uterine fibroids nowadays involves the use of the latest technologies and equipment, the use of modern medicines.

Symptoms and diagnosis

Common signs of large uterine fibroids include: persistent spotting, abdominal enlargement, discomfort when urinating, anemia, weakness, and decreased immunity.

The main method of detecting this disease is ultrasound.  This type of study allows you to determine the shape, localization of fibroids, and its structure.

If a large uterine fibroid is suspected, the following diagnostic methods are also used:

  • general and biochemical blood tests;
  • general urinalysis;
  • determination of blood glucose levels;
  • taking a smear on the microflora and the presence of atypical cells.

These methods allow not only to determine the exact size of the neoplasm, but also to assess the possibility of its degeneration into a malignant tumor.

Treatment

Treatment of large uterine fibroids does not involve the use of conservative methods. The only thing a doctor can prescribe is hormonal medications that help reduce the neoplasm for subsequent surgery.

The type of intervention depends on the size of the tumor and the age of the patient.

If the size of the node allows, a large fibroid is removed while preserving the uterus. Most often, doctors use the laparoscopic method — surgery performed through small incisions. This method avoids noticeable scarring and allows the patient to recover faster.

In the event that a woman is in menopause, she is prescribed laparoscopic hysterectomy — removal of the uterus along with myomatous nodes. If the position of the tumors or their size do not allow this, then abdominal surgery is prescribed.

It is worth noting that after surgery, doctors often also prescribe hormone therapy.
