Partial removal of the uterus

Partial removal of the uterus or partial hysterectomy is a process in which the body of the reproductive organ is completely removed. Doctors do not remove the cervix and ovaries during the procedure. The intervention is performed minimally invasively through small incisions in the skin or through the vagina. Compared to complete removal of the uterus, partial hysterectomy has advantages:

  • the number of cases of sexual dysfunction is reduced
  • the structure of the ligamentous apparatus is preserved
  • the frequency of urinary incontinence and prolapse of the internal genitals decreases.

However, it should be noted that partial removal of the uterus and pregnancy, unfortunately, are not compatible and carrying out this type of intervention deprives a woman of the opportunity to become a mother.

Indications for partial hysterectomy

Before performing partial removal of the uterus, the patient undergoes an examination and receives advice from a surgeon and gynecologist. Surgical intervention is a radical method of treatment and can be prescribed only if conservative therapy is ineffective. Partial hysterectomy is used for severe uterine bleeding, fibroids, and advanced endometriosis.

Partial hysterectomy for fibroids

Uterine fibroids are benign tumors, however, their appearance leads to discomfort. In the case when myomatous nodules are small or do not cause bleeding, hysterectomy is not used. Partial removal of the uterus in fibroids is performed in cases where the tumor reaches a large size, disrupts the female reproductive system and leads to bleeding.

Rehabilitation after partial removal of the uterus
After this type of surgery, the patient is prescribed painkillers and discharged to the clinic after about two days. Since bleeding is possible for one and a half or two months and there is a risk of adhesions, the patient should refrain from sexual activity and weight lifting. According to reviews from women who have undergone this type of surgery, recovery is uneventful.
