Types of cervical cancer
Cervical cancer is a malignant tumor that develops from the mucous membrane of the cervix. The disease can cause numerous metastases – both to the body of the uterus and the vagina, as well as to bones, liver, lungs and other organs. The disease can occur in various forms, and modern medicine identifies several types of cervical cancer.
The main types of cervical cancer
Tumors in uterine cervical cancer can belong to different types. Each species has its own characteristics. They differ in their histological structure, on the basis of which three main types of cervical cancer are distinguished:
- precancerous forms. They occur even before the formation of a tumor. Neoplasms are benign, but in the absence of surgical treatment they become malignant. The disease gradually penetrates into the deep layer of the uterine cervix, gradually acquiring more and more dangerous properties.;
- squamous cell carcinoma of the cervix. The most common form of uterine cancer. Its general characteristic is the formation of a tumor from epithelial cells. This form proceeds in different ways, with different external signs, by which it is possible to determine its subspecies;
- adenocarcinoma of the cervix. A fairly rare type of cervical cancer: the neoplasm is formed from glandular tissues and often reaches a fairly large volume, while the symptoms sometimes do not appear at all, so this form is difficult to diagnose. Neoplasms can be localized both in the isthmus of the uterus and in the vagina. If they are allowed to grow, cancer cells can enter the bloodstream, which will cause damage to the lymphatic system.
Rare types of cervical cancer
There are a number of forms of cervical cancer that are quite rare. Nevertheless, it is precisely these forms that pose the greatest danger to life:
- the mucin-producing form. It is a very aggressive type characterized by the presence of mucin in the neoplasm.;
- neuroendocrine form. Tumors grow from neuroendocrine compounds. The nature of the neoplasms can be either of the same type or mixed.;
- the clear-celled form. It is typical for women over 40 years of age and differs in that tumors are insensitive to hormone therapy. However, this form is quite easy to diagnose and can be effectively treated.
Types of cervical cancer treatment
Even if oncology acquires a rare form, its treatment is possible thanks to the achievements of modern medicine. This treatment is carried out by special minimally invasive methods, which make it possible to avoid damage to healthy tissues during surgery as much as possible.
There are various types of treatment for cervical cancer. These include laparoscopy, during which the tumor is removed through a small incision (up to 15 mm in diameter). High-tech robotic surgery is also popular, which makes it possible to safely remove a tumor using an innovative surgical robot. Non-surgical removal of inoperable neoplasms by means of cryotherapy (exposure to low temperatures) and radiation therapy (intense exposure to ionizing radiation) is also possible.
