Removal of thyroid cyst
Removal of a thyroid cyst is a medical procedure that may be recommended if the cyst causes symptoms or increases in size. The thyroid gland is a small organ located in the neck area that plays an important role in regulating the body's metabolism.
There are several methods for removing thyroid cysts:
- Aspiration puncture under ultrasound control (ultrasound): In this method, the doctor can use ultrasound equipment to guide the needle into the cyst and aspirate its contents. This procedure can be performed at the doctor's office.
- Surgical removal (thyroidectomy): If the cyst is too large, causing pressure on surrounding tissues, or if malignancy is suspected, the doctor may decide to perform surgery to remove the cyst and possibly part or all of the thyroid gland.
- Treatment with radioactive iodine: In some cases, after removal of a cyst or the entire thyroid gland, patients may be prescribed treatment with radioactive iodine to destroy the remaining tissues.
Before making a decision to remove a thyroid cyst, it is important to consult an endocrinologist or surgeon in order to evaluate all treatment options and make an informed decision.
