Peking Union Medical College Hospital (PUMCH) is a large comprehensive multidisciplinary hospital located in the Dongcheng District of Beijing, integrating medical services, scientific research, and education. The hospital enjoys a high reputation both in China and worldwide. Founded in 1921, it became one of the first medical institutions in China to provide medical services to foreign nationals. The hospital has special departments for VIP patients and foreign citizens.
In 2006, the hospital was designated as the official medical service hospital for athletes of the Chinese national team by decision of the Chinese Olympic Committee.
In 2024, the Institute for Innovative Development and Diagnosis of Rare Diseases was established at the hospital, and the first specialized department for rare diseases in China was opened.
Currently, the hospital employs more than 4,000 staff members, including 5 academicians from the two national academies, and operates 53 clinical and medical-technical departments. The hospital has 20 national key disciplines, 29 national clinical specialty programs, 16 doctoral programs, 29 master’s programs, 6 national continuing medical education bases, 18 resident training bases for secondary disciplines, and 15 specialist training bases for tertiary disciplines.
The hospital was founded in 1921 with funding from the Rockefeller Foundation. From the very beginning of its construction, the goal was to create the best medical center in Asia.
According to the published 2016 rankings, “China Hospital Rankings 2016” and “Reputation Rankings of Specialized Departments of Chinese Hospitals 2016,” Peking Union Medical College Hospital ranked first and continues to hold the leading position.
