Artificial insemination (AI) is a method of infertility treatment in which a man's sperm is injected directly into a woman's uterus or cervix. The goal of AI is to increase the chance of conception, fertilization, and pregnancy.
Types of artificial insemination:
- Intrauterine insemination (IUI): Sperm is injected directly into the uterus.
- Intracervical insemination (ICI): Sperm is injected into the cervix.
AI can be recommended for couples who have difficulty conceiving due to the following factors:
- Male infertility (for example, low sperm count or motility)
- Female infertility (for example, obstruction of the fallopian tubes, endometriosis)
- Infertility of unknown origin
- Using donor sperm
- Same-sex couples and single women who want to get pregnant
AI is usually performed at a fertility clinic. The procedure includes the following steps::
- Ovarian stimulation: A woman may be prescribed medications to stimulate ovulation and produce multiple eggs.
- Sperm Processing: A man's sperm is collected and processed in a laboratory to remove immobile or abnormal sperm cells.
- Insemination: Processed sperm is injected into a woman's uterus or cervix using a thin catheter.
The chances of AI success may vary depending on the age of the woman, the cause of infertility, and the type of procedure used. In general, the chances of pregnancy in one AI cycle are about 15-20%. The following factors can contribute to an increase in the chances of successful AI:
- Younger age of the woman
- Good overall health
- Normal ovulation
- A short period of infertility
AI is usually a safe procedure, but some potential side effects and risks include:
- Cramps or discomfort during insemination
- Bleeding or spotting after insemination
- Infection
- Multiple pregnancies (twins or triplets)
Depending on the couple's specific circumstances, there are alternative fertility treatments besides AI, such as:
- Fertility Drugs
- In vitro fertilization (IVF)
- Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI)
- Conjugal Intravaginal Fertilization (IVF)
