Cryoembryo transfer, also known as cryopreserved embryo transfer, is a procedure in which frozen (cryopreserved) embryos obtained as a result of artificial insemination (IVF) procedures are thawed and then transferred into a woman's uterus for the purpose of pregnancy.
The process of implanting cryoembryons usually includes the following steps::
- Cryoembryonic defrosting: Frozen embryos are thawed under special conditions to preserve their integrity and viability.
- Endometrial preparation: A woman undergoes preparatory therapy to create optimal conditions for embryo implantation. This may include taking hormonal medications to prepare the endometrium of the uterus.
- Cryopreserved Embryo Transfer: Thawed embryos are transferred into a woman's uterus using a thin catheter that is inserted through the cervix.
Cryoembryonic transplantation provides an opportunity to use frozen embryos that were preserved after a previous IVF procedure. This can be useful if a woman has problems with pregnancy after the first procedure or if she has decided to delay pregnancy until a more appropriate time.
This method also reduces the risk of multiple pregnancies, as only one or two cryopreserved embryos can be transferred, unlike the usual IVF procedure, where more embryos can be transferred.
