- Although there are exceptions, most schwannomas are united by:
- benign — slow growth, absence of metastases;
- an unexpressed clinical picture — the disease can be completely asymptomatic.;
- the presence of a capsule, which greatly facilitates treatment.
Diagnostics
MRI is the most preferred method of diagnosis of schwannomas. This method of examination can be recommended by a doctor if during the examination he pays attention to one of the symptoms of schwannoma, they are also sometimes found accidentally during a general examination.
The clinical picture depends on the location of the tumor. Since it most often affects the auditory nerve, patients report hearing and balance disorders.
Surgical methods of schwann treatment abroad
Since most of the schwannomas are separated from the surrounding tissues by a dense capsule, they are quite easy to remove surgically.
The operation is performed if the neoplasm bothers the patient: it grows rapidly, causes discomfort and dysfunction of the affected organs. If it does not manifest itself in any way, doctors in Russia and abroad often choose observational tactics: they monitor the progress of the tumor and, until it begins to inspire concern, do not prescribe treatment.
One of the indications for the beginning of active actions on the part of doctors is the malignancy of the tumor. This is an acceleration of growth, germination into surrounding tissues, and the spread of metastases.
Additional methods of schwann treatment abroad
Chemotherapy for schwannomas is ineffective: as a rule, it only slows down the growth of the tumor, but is not able to stop it or destroy the suture completely. Radiation therapy is used as an alternative to surgery.: it is indicated when surgical treatment is not possible.
The elderly age of the patient or the inaccessible location of the tumor is a reason to consider modern methods of radiation therapy. In order to ensure accuracy and speed, radiosurgery is used — irradiating the tumor with a higher dose of radiation than usual. Since the radiation is directed only at the lesion, healthy tissues do not suffer. Cyber Knife and Gamma Knife are radiosurgery systems that are widely used abroad.
For most patients, the prognosis is favorable: treatment of schwannoma abroad leads to complete removal of the tumor with minimal risk of complications or recurrence.
