Prostate adenoma

Prostate adenoma or benign prostatic hyperplasia is characterized by enlargement of the prostate gland. There are two main phases of prostate growth: at puberty (the prostate almost doubles in size) and at the age of 25-30 (the process continues throughout a man's life). Hyperplasia usually occurs during the second stage of growth and is more common in the elderly.

With the disease, one or more nodules form in the prostate, which enlarge and begin to compress the urethra. The walls of the bladder thicken, and its ability to empty completely is lost. This causes characteristic symptoms: frequent urination, urinary incontinence, pain during ejaculation, an unpleasant urine odor, and more. Treatment of prostate adenoma abroad will help reduce the severity of the symptoms and avoid complications.

Diagnosis of prostate adenoma

The diagnosis of benign prostatic hyperplasia is based on a digital rectal examination and the symptoms experienced by the patient. The urologist may also prescribe a number of other tests.:

  • urine analysis;
  • assessment of PSA (prostate specific antigen) levels;
  • the urodynamic test;
  • cystoscopy;
  • transrectal ultrasound;
  • a biopsy.

After diagnosis, the doctor may prescribe the following medications: alpha blockers, phosphodiesterase-5 inhibitors, Haytrin, Cardura, Flomax and Rapaflo. If the drugs prove ineffective, surgery is prescribed. The operation is performed to remove enlarged prostate tissue or dilate the urethra to eliminate urinary retention. Treatment of prostate adenoma abroad includes minimally invasive procedures:

  • transurethral needle ablation (radiofrequency therapy);
  • transurethral resection of the prostate (using a fiber optic resectoscope);
  • laser treatment;
  • microwave therapy;
  • installation of a prostatic stent to improve urination function;
  • laparoscopic prostatectomy;
  • high-intensity focused ultrasonography (sound energy is used to eliminate excess prostate tissue);
  • embolization of the prostate arteries (some vessels are blocked to slow down the growth of the gland).

To alleviate prostate obstruction, tissue removal can be replaced by the insertion of a UroLift implant. This new technology, formally known as prostate liposuction, makes it possible to shrink obstructing tissue in the path of the urinary duct without damaging blood vessels.

Oriental medicine for the treatment of prostate adenoma abroad

In Chinese hospitals, patients with prostate adenoma undergo herbal medicine. The results of a recent study have shown that Chinese herbal medicines can be part of an effective treatment for benign hyperplasia. For example, creeping serenoa reduces inflammation and restores the balance of androgen hormones, reducing the size of the prostate gland. The effectiveness of serenoa increases in combination with selenium and lycopene. In another clinical study, a complex of herbs (African plum tree, pumpkin seed and small-flowered cypress) with lycopene was tested. In patients receiving the drug, there was a significant decrease in painful symptoms, and the frequency of urination was almost halved.
